Presente simple vs continuo

I am doing & I do

(Present Continuos vs Present Simple )

En esta lección veremos las diferencias de uso entre "I'm doing" y "I do".

Tambien conoceremos algunos verbos que, a diferencia del español, no se usan en tiempo continuo.

Jerry is watching TV with his friends: Jerry esta mirando la TV con sus amigos

He is not playing the guitar: Él no esta tocando la guitarra.

But Jerry has a guitar: Pero Jerry tiene una guitarra.

He often plays it and he plays very well: Él la toca a menudo y toca muy bien.

Jerry plays the guitar...Jerry toca la guitarra

...but he is not playing the guitar now: pero no está tocando la guitarra ahora.

Is he playing the guitar? No, he isn't (Present continuous)

Does he play the guitar? Yes, he does (Present simple)

I am doing

Lo usamos para hacer referencia a algo que ocurre AHORA, en el momento mismo que hablamos.

Please be quiet. I'm working: Tranquilos por favor. Estoy trabajando.

Mike is having a shower at the moment: Mike esta tomando una ducha en este momento.

Take an umbrella with you. It's raining. Lleva un paraguas contigo. Está lloviendo.

You can turn off the TV. I'm not watching it. Puedes apagar la TV. No estoy mirandola.

I do

Lo usamos para hacer referencia a cosas que suceden en GENERAL, "todo el tiempo" como los hábitos o rutinas, o "solo a veces" como los pasatiempos pero que en general son acciones que se repiten en el tiempo.

She works every day from 9 o´clock to 5.30: Ella trabaja todos los dias de 9 (en punto) hasta las 5.30

Phillip has a shower every morning: Phillip toma una ducha cada mañana.

It rains a lot in winter. Llueve mucho en invierno.

What do you usually do on the weekend? ¿Qué haces usualmente el fin de semana?

Verbos que no usamos en tiempo continuo

En conversaciones y escritos estos verbos no se usan con terminación -ing.

Sin embargo a veces encontramos excepciones en expresiones artisticas como poemas o canciones ej: I'm loving you. Pero fuera de esos contexto no se usan con -ing-

like	love	want	know	understand
remember	depend	prefer	hate	need
	believe	forget	mean

I'm tired. I want to go home (I'm wanting to go home esta incorrecto)

Do you know that girl?

I don't remember her name

I don't understand. What do you mean?
