(Past continuous)
El pasado continuo nos sirve para hablar acerca de "lo que estaba ocurriendo" en un determinado momento en el pasado.
Por ejemplo:
At 13:30, I was having lunch.
A las 13:30, yo estaba almorzando.
Como vemos, usamos este tiempo verbal para referirnos a cosas que ocurrieron durante un transcurso de tiempo determinado.
Sin embargo, la acción o situación (having lunch at 12:30) ya habia comenzado antes de esa hora y no habia terminado aún.

Were they talking with Mr. Bloom? Yes, they were. / No, they weren't.
¿Estaban hablando con el Señor Bloom? Si, si estaban / No, no estaban.
Was she waiting for Mary? Yes, she was. / No, she wasn't.
¿Estaba esperando a Mary? Si, si estaba / No, no estaba
The cat was playing with the dog.
El gato estaba jugando con el perro.
Rachel was wearing a skirt.
Rachel estaba usando un vestido.
It was raining. The kids weren't very happy.
Estaba lloviendo. Los niños no estaban muy felices.
The baby was laughing out loud.
El bebé estaba riendo a carcajadas.
Sara was texting their friends when they knocked on the door.
