JESSICAOkay, uh,   my mother and father. Let's see. My mom is three years older than my dad, and they are like night and day. My mom is, uh, 5 foot 4 on a good day, 5 foot 2, I think, in real life, and she is very sweet and very nice, and very caring, and umm very cute. Everybody tells her how young she looks, and how she resembles my sister, perhaps.

My father is very much completely opposite that. He is a very big man, very loud, very funny, very boisterous. He…he makes friends no matter where he goes. For example, sometimes he goes to Florida and makes all sorts of   new friends, so just go by himself and he's kind of a magnent to people, and so my parents are completely opposite, and they complement each other very well. My dad has a very good sense of humor. My mom is very gentle, very nice.

TODDWow. When was the last time you talked to your parents?

TODD
JESSICAUh, I talked to ‘em probably about two weeks ago. Yeah, everything is going well.
TODDOk, are you going to see them soon? TODD
JESSICA: Uh, I am gonna go home after the holidays and we're gonna have a Christmas kind of… in January or February. Yeah, depending on when my brother can come in.
TODD: Ok, if you are more like your mother or your father?

TODD
JESSICA: Umm, I think I have traits of both, actually. I look more like my mother, umm except that I am about a foot taller (laughs) …yeah, I resemble my mom more. But I think I have both of the characteristics of my mom and dad.
  TODD: OK. Great. Thanks.

Vocabulary Notes

 Like night and day

“My mom and dad are like night and day”

We say things are like 'night and day' when they are very different or opposite. We also use this phrase to describe the difference after we make a change.  Notice the following:

  1. The difference between the new washing machine and the old one is like night and day.
 Resembles

“Everybody tells her how young she looks and how she resembles my sister”

To 'resemble' someone or something is to have a similar appearance.  Notice the following:

  1. He resembles George Clooney a little.
  2. That rock kind of resembles an elephant.
 Make friends

“My dad makes friends no matter where he goes”.

When we start new friendships we are 'making friends.' Notice the following:

  1. Where do you make friends?
  2. When you move to a new place it takes a while to make friends.

 Complement each other

“My parents are completely opposite and they complement each other very well”.

If two things or people 'complement each other' they each complete the other or make it more whole.  We say this about two things or people that go together well or have a nice balance. Notice the following:

  1. Do you think sweet and salty food complement each other?
  2. My two jobs really complement each other.  One is active and at the other one I just sit.
 Sense of humor

“My dad has a very good sense of humor, and my mom is very gentle”.

Your 'sense of humor' is what you find funny or what makes you laugh.  A person with a good sense of humor laughs a lot.  Notice the following:

  1. Some people don't like this movie, but it fits my sense of humor.
  2. I don't understand his sense of humor.
